Underappreciated Czech tech (Czechnical?) death metallers Godless Truth are bursting forth with their newest, and eponymous, record, in March of 2022 on Transcending Obscurity and I think it might just be the one that turns the most heads. Their previous works, like 1999’s classic ‘Burning Existence’, have been underground hits but I don’t feel enough people talk about them in the pantheon of European greats. ‘Godless Truth’ might be about to change this.
This is a record that benefits greatly from the band’s roots in the early 90s, as their brand of technical wizardry is grounded squarely in brutality that is also memorable and catchy, not just endless wankery of the frets. ‘The Decision’ is an absolute beast, full of flesh tearing riffs and gut busting drums, while ‘Breathe Fire’ is an aural rampage of truly elephantine proportions. The production is luxuriously rich, giving each moment a warmth and fullness that some tech death lacks. Sure, the likes of ‘RIP Cage’ is a clinical exercise in surgical barbarity, but it never feels soulless. ‘Fortune Time’ has some awesome melodic leads, and the wandering bass powers through in spades. In fact, I like the prominence of the bass in places, it reminds me of some of Atheist’s best work. ‘Bred in Greed’ is a really good example of this.
Cloaked in luminous, xenomorphic cover art that enhances the otherwordly feel that some of the atmosphere creates, ‘Godless Truth’ is a record of frightening skill and an almost straightforward simplicity in execution. Godless Truth write some great technical songs but somehow they feel like old school classics. I don’t understand it, but then again I don’t need to. I just need to enjoy it, which I do immensely.
