Review by Sandre the Giant

You can tell immediately from the classic look of Revolting’s ‘The Shadow at the World’s End’ album art that you are about to experience some old school death metal, the style of which is maybe a little Gorguts inspired perhaps (is the cover of ‘Considered Dead’ inside the tomb at the end?), maybe mostly from the land they call home, Sweden. It is out right now through Transcending Obscurity. But is it that simple?

Yeah. Yeah it pretty much is. But despair ye not, this is old school Swedeath that is actually great, not just chainsaw guitar tones and ripoff Entombed riffs. Take opener ‘Defleshed’, yes there is a nasty guitar tone running through it but it takes as much from At the Gates as it does from Dismember. An innate sense of melody is vital to the work Revolting are doing. ‘1888’ has a satisfying chug to it, while the flesh is torn and ripped by the rabid title track.

Every track here has the same excellent blend of melody and brutality. ‘Daggers That Mimic Life’s Pain’ sounds like Amon Amarth with a rougher edge, ‘Dragged Back to the Cellar’ is an absolute killer cut while the thunderous low end of ‘Carnage Will Come’ is a triumph for the legacy of Swedish death metal. Revolting do more than enough to justify their place in the new wave of bands coming to renew our passion as fans for the old school. Most of us never lost it, but it is nice to be reminded of the pure, unadulterated joy found in a chainsaw riff and a guttural roar. ‘The Shadow at the World’s End’ is exactly what I need these days.
