Walking Corpse - Our Hands, Your Throat

Review by Sandre the Giant

When you play grind, and you’re from the same country as genre icons Nasum, you’ve kinda got a lot to live up to. Now, that might be a little unfair to Sweden’s Walking Corpse but hey, I’ve said it now so, tough! They’re also from Gothenburg but I suspect there’s very little melody in here. ‘Our Hands, Your Throat’ is out at the start of December through Transcending Obscurity.

The grim, spiralling apocalypse of Walking Corpse’s sound hits you straight away with the frantic assault of opener ‘Dreamflight Navigator’. Grind can often be a spasming, angular sort of genre to follow, and Walking Corpse are no different. Their riffs stab in from seemingly random directions, shrieking fury and gurgling bile spew from vocalist Henrik Blomqvist, while there’s a satisfying weight to the madness. But, as seems key in many of Transcending Obscurity’s releases, there is a noticeable dissonance creeping throughout. The bug-eyed mania of the title track is fantastic, while the mind bending ‘Brainworm’ weaves dissonant fury upon the listener in waves. When the pace drops, such as in ‘Falling Through a World of Wounds’ and the brutal death metal low end comes chugging in, you’re just in awe at the meticulous pacing throughout. The longer tracks have a lot going on, while the shorter ones are exercises in unhinged chaos.

There’s often a point where grindcore starts to lose its initial impact, and since most classic grindcore records are short you don’t normally reach that point. Walking Corpse don’t reach that either, and in fact their oddly structured take on the genre actually makes me want to hear more. ‘Our Hands, Your Throat’ is a revelation of fury, of new ideas and chaotic carnage, and they do indeed fulfil the promise of their countrymen’s legacy. Nasum would be proud lads, because this is fucking brutal.
