0N0 - Unwavering Resonance

Review by Sandre the Giant

Slovakia’s 0N0 are a band I have experienced before, on their 2019 ‘Cloaked Climax Concealed’ EP, and I choose the word ‘experienced’ carefully as they play a uniquely atmospheric and industrial form of death/doom. Their new release, ‘Unwavering Resonance’, is out in June through The House of What You See, a label dedicated exclusively to releasing the band’s work.

Opener ‘Clay Weight’ will bring home to you the exact nature of 0N0’s impressive, esoteric take on death/doom. The huge, lumbering riffs are cloaked in smothering, almost industrial smogginess, clouding true intentions howled by huge roars. The shuddering uncomfortableness increases as dissonant melody fades in and out, a real melding of their Godflesh and Gorguts influences. In fact, it has always been difficult to imagine how bands can take Godflesh’s seminal industrial doom (not the genre, the feeling) in a new direction, but 0N0 have found it. The churning low end of the miasmic ‘Shattering’ matches its frenzied, atonal death metal riffing in a way that Ulcerate would’ve been proud of, but shirks none of its cloying atmosphere. Like the frantic crashing of machinery in a murky factory on a death world somewhere in the universe’s darkest corners, 0N0 are a monstrous entity.

From the dynamically diverse and sonically devastating title track (oh man, those clean vocals sneaking in? Fuck…) into the terrifying, monolithic collapse of closing track ‘Wander the Vacant Twilight’, 0N0 have surpassed even my lofty expectations to create a record of unyielding vision and terror. The sublime collaboration between crumbling industrial edifices and bleak, monolithic death doom makes ‘Unwavering Resonance’ a must listen, and 0N0 another band that you have to get in on immediately.
