Polish/American progressive technical melodic death power metal team Chaos Over Cosmos are described with too many words there, but you’ll understand when you hear their new self released record ‘The Silver Lining Between the Stars, self released by the band on August 1st. They’ve experienced a few lineup and stylistic changes since their debut in 2018, but those styles are now converging into a more cohesive piece.
Opener ‘Violent Equilibrium’ will instantly set out the stall for the guitar heroics and technical melodic death metal you’re going to see a lot of over the next 35 odd minutes. Pyrotechnic displays on the guitar frets, swelling melodic fervour, soaring vocal growls; the whole thing has a definite Scar Symmetry meets Dragonforce vibe about it, but with a more spacey and heavy atmosphere threaded throughout. You’ll immediately jump to Devin Townsend conclusions as well when the vocals start, but it never quite reaches the heights of Devin’s finest work. ‘The Last Man in Orbit’ is another epic piece, deftly trading heaviness for melody repeatedly but never getting lost in it, while the instrumental ”Eternal Return’ seems only here to impress with its wild prowess. Frankly, it does, as does the galloping ‘Control ZED’ which feels like it’s just waiting to be a breakout single. Closer ‘The Sins Between the Stars’ takes everything you’ve experienced up til now, cranks them up to 11 and creates probably the best song on the record by doing so.
A technical masterpiece, almost gloriously OTT at times but still remaining a wonderful record to get lost in. Powerful, memorable, heavy and progressive as fuck, you’ll either get lost int he soaring melody or drowned by the notes per minute but you’ll never not enjoy yourself. I’ve played this I don’t know how many times in the past week, and I’ll do it for the rest of the year. Wow.
