The beautiful stark red of this cassette cover is instantly striking, and Atra Mors do the same with their music. A part of the blackened hordes of Cumbria, in Northern England, ‘Cloaked in Shadow’ marks their debut full length, and the cassette I have got from Carvetii Productions is simply awesome. I cannot say it enough times, this is a tape label that never fails to impress.

Opener ‘Fog of Ruin’ pulses with a dark energy, writhing in tremelo riffing and harsh screams. ‘Cloaked in Shadow’ is just that; layered with a shadowy atmosphere that enhances the gloomy chords within. The haunting ‘Spirits of the Darkwood’ and the menacing ‘Undead Lust’ conjure the spirits of Mayhem and Xasthur, while the shrieking ‘Vomit Black Blood’ is enough to run shivers though your body. Black metal feels alive and kicking when in the hands of this band. There’s hints of Satanic Warmaster lurking in here too, particularly in the ghostly ‘Snow Falls Upon a Wretched Tomb’, with the moody synths lurking in the background.

I sit listening to this album while rain beats against my window. This feels like a record enshrouded by miserable, cold rain that incessantly grasps you in its cold embrace. Personified by the bleak cold hatred of ‘Amidst Rotting Wood I Reach My End’, Atra Mors weave savage black magic throughout ‘Cloaked in Shadow’, drawing much inspiration from raw black metal legends but becoming something more. Something visceral, thrilling and inherently black.

Gnarly doom trio Tood are one of those bands that, when you first hear them, you wonder how they haven’t exploded already. Their debut self titled EP has all the fuzzed out rumbling groove that any self respecting Sabbath worshipper could want. If you are lucky enough to grab one of the cassette copies that Carvetii Productions have got, it adds to the gloriously old school vibe oozing from your speakers.

Opener ‘Gaffer Tape’ is like the soundtrack to some ancient, murky horror movie. The fuzzed guitar tone takes you into dark occult territories while a touch of early Cathedral in the vocals and psychedelic vibes loom throughout. ‘Discordant Method’ drives us onward towards the endtimes, aching riffs soak you in darkness and a mysterious bloodlust rises. The twisting, enchanting ‘The Bastard’ provides the most graceful of psychedelic freakouts before the churning ‘Schweinhacker’ brings us to a close.

If Tood were around when the first evolutionary steps of heavy metal were taken, they would be revered as legends by now. Their sound is vintage, enthralling and insistent. ‘Tood’ is a new favourite of mine; a deceptively heavy, simple journey to the dark mystical heart of heavy metal. Lead us to our doom, for doom this is

Edinburgh based death/doom newcomers Wolf Sermon have got their 2016 demo out on cassette now through the always reliable Carvetii Productions. This is four slabs of dense, savage and dark metal for those of us drawn to the Asphyx/Autopsy axis of death metal. Be prepared for a couple of surprises though.

‘Pagan Skin’ rides out with a vicious, chugging Swedish death buzz to its riffing, while a strong Asphyx vibe laces its way through. Dark melodies are woven into each monolithic riff, bringing it above your standard Autopsy clone fare. It’s that sense of melody that lifts the superb ‘Violent Art’ into the realms of greatness; where mournful lead guitar meets crushing bass riffs and howling growls. When a band makes sure on their DEMO to do things a little differently to stand out, that’s a potential marker for future greatness.

Anyone who enjoys great, heavy music can appreciate the shifting sands of ‘Pillars of Vengeance’, but Wolf Sermon plant little nuances within each track that only enhances your joy at the pure spirit of their demo. Wrap that up in a tasteful cassette package from Carvetii and I’m frankly embarassed I’ve only just come across this now, because I love this shit. Grab a copy as soon as possible!

Sadly the death of Acid Goat has come before I really even discovered them, but thankfully Carvetii Productions have dropped both of their releases as a compilation cassette and what a fine piece of merchandise it is. Almost an hour of sublime, stoner doom is about to bulldoze you here, so sit back and enjoy the punishment.

It opens with the four tracks from their ‘Acid Goat’ debut, and the thunderous ‘Demonstash’ which groans and lumbers its way under the stress of awesome Sabbathian riffs. There’s an inherent menace lurking within the thick basslines of ‘Nosferatu’, which sways with malicious intent. That insatiably evil groove is a common theme within the entirety of this release; a rumbling highlight being the visceral Pink Floyd cover ‘Another Brick in the Wall Part 2’. The second part of the tape is Acid Goat ‘II’, a more self assured evolution of the dense groove of the first demo but with a more raw edge.

There’s a little Sabbath, a little EyeHateGod, a healthy dose of Electric Wizard darkness (especially in the mourning melody of ‘Sacrament’) and no lack of herbal influence all the way through this release. I’m glad, even if they’re gone, that I got to experience the groove, the soul and the heaviness of Acid Goat. If you’ve ever enjoyed a slow and heavy as fuck riff storm, then this is for you. Highlights for me are the tectonic opener and the moody closer ‘Brazen Bull’, which drags us off into the sunset perfectly. Get it as soon as possible!

Natum Abortus - With the Strength of Sin

Extremely raw Swedish black metal spliced with noise elements is the name of the game with Natum Abortus, and their debut demo recording ‘With the Strength of Sin’, currently available in limited numbers on cassette from Carvetii Productions. This is fucking nasty shit right here.

Opener ‘From the Blackest Pits of Hell’ is almost ear splittingly intense, with seriously low fi guitar mixing with horrendous shrieking and the same can be said for the murky and ultra raw ‘Satanic Baptism’. It’s like a black hole of noise, dragging you into oblivion all the while the voices of madness claw at your mind. The self titled closer is the real test of sanity though; seven plus minutes of crackling noise, sounding like someone is kneeling on the microphone while the video from the Ring starts playing.

Natum Abortus have created what seems like an endurance at points, where their black metal becomes so raw it is almost too much. If you’re into this kind of ear molesting carnage, then you’ll have a field day with it. Pretty much reinventing the word ‘raw’ for the genre, Natum Abortus are like a black metal stress test, and it ain’t easy to pass.

Image of BASTARDIZER - 'Enforcers of Evil'. (Australian Blackened Thrash Cassette)

I just got a hold of the rerelease of Australian blackened thrashers Bastardizer’s ‘Enforcers of Evil’ from Carvetii Productions, on a brand new shiny cassette no less! It seems that, outside South America, Australia seem to do the whole Bathory/Venom/Celtic Frost axis worship a great deal of credit, and Bastardizer are no exception.

This is a truly raging slab of blackened thrash metal, with the ethos summed up pretty accurately in the killer opener ‘Bastard, Bullets, Bitches and Beer’. Almost entirely forgetting anything was invented after about 1983, taking the Venom blueprint and dragging it south of Heaven,c ranking up the intensity and increasing the rawness tenfold. The savagely catchy ‘Bathory and Lust’, the rampant title track and the rough and ready ‘WWIII’ are all tremendous tracks and pay tribute to the vibrancy of the Australian scene.

The awesome, early Sodom riffs that populate ‘Eureka’ crop up many times, with a grim Teutonic flair shredding through ‘Pentagram of Pleasure’. Bastardizer strap Motorhead to Sarcofago and see what happens. Turns out what happens is infectious, rabid thrashing black metal that doesn’t rely on gimmicks, controversy or fashion. There’s a shit ton of bands like this out there, but none come close to the filthy fun that you get on this record. I fucking love it, and so should you!

Gloomy German black metallers Bergwacht are having their ‘Jagd’ debut released through the excellent Carvetii Productions on cassette, and I found this a great opportunity to reassess their debut from last summer.

The grinding title track opens this EP, with a relentless burning slab of traditional black metal fury. But this feels like a false dawn for the behemoth ‘Vormachtsstellungen’ that follows. Opening with an ominous hum, a lonesome melodies lurking barely audible in the gloom. A cold guitar line builds a melancholic journey upwards; a movement from isolated forests towards a cold grey sky. It feels like the hypnotic riff will go on forever, until dark ambience rolls in and takes us to a looming conclusion.

Finishing with ‘Schlucht’, a more traditional propulsive black metal song with a scathing vocal, and the melancholic yet melodic ‘Outro’, ‘Jagd’ instantly stands out because it is different. Most BM bands don’t go for a 14 minute instrumental/ambient track on their debut, and with musical chops like this, Bergwacht will hopefully go far.
