These South African slam titans were put on the map with their crushing debut EP ‘Cognizant Castigation’ in 2014, and this, ‘Finis Omnium Ignorantiam’, released originally in 2015. Transcending Records are rereleasing both on vinyl and cassette this year, and I’ll have a review up for the debut up sometime soon as well. This is almost the perfect realisation of what brutal death metal is all about.
‘New World Order’ raises vast fists of cyclopean destruction, annihilating everything in front of it in a raging sea of blastbeats and brutal growls. But Vulvodynia are instantly over with me by not relying incessantly and entirely on pig squealing, which is something I cannot always deal with in slam or brutal death metal. Crushing breakdowns and razor sharp riffing pervades the cosmic ‘Superluminal Wormhole Divulgation’, while the bowel scraping ‘Praenuntius Descends’ is almost unbearably brutal.
Vulvodynia retain some semblances of melody hidden within the relentless punishment, sneaking into ‘Consuming Thee Illuminatus’, and the glorious carnage of ‘Infinite Darkness’, but for the most part it is straight on Dying Fetus worship, with the technical expertise of modern day bands like Wormed or Analepsy. Half an hour of head caving heaviness. Ouch.
