Review: Bladecatcher – Obverse (EP)

Bladecatcher are, judging by their music, not named after one of my favourite Mastodon songs (you know, the one on Blood Mountain thats all riffs and fucked up sound effects). The one man project from Colorado plays horrible, gut churningly primitive death metal. ‘Obverse’ is only three tracks long, but it’ll keep you coming back.

Opening with the title track, a cavernous vocal overlays a rattling, creaking technical death display. It’s amazing how this sounds so old, fetid and decayed while yet featuring some dazzling technical moments. The primal chug is sickening, with unsettling dense growling and jagged guitar lines that shoot out in spurs of dissonance. ‘Disemboweling the Moon Goddess’ has more of these moments, like the twisted bastard offspring of Portal and Autopsy. There’s some true evil sounds belched from this EP, and by the time you make it to the end of the twisted mass of burning death that is ‘Bow-star and Nibir’, you’re about ready to be physically sick and then put it back on again.

Like the crawling chaos come to life, Bladecatcher’s debut is suffocatingly dark and awful. Sounding like the unholy utterance of the darkest corners of the Earth, Bladecatcher are sure to become one of my favourite bands. Only Death is Real.
