Review: Necrocosm – Octopian Eclipse

First post of 2015 and it feels like an age since I’ve really got stuck into any proper writing. The festive period is just not good for finding spare time to listen to and write about music. I’ve been sent some bits and bobs to write about in the time I’ve been busy, so I’m starting off with just a short review of Necrocosm‘s new song, ‘Octopian Eclipse‘. Necrocosm, for those who aren’t in the know, are melodic death metallers from North Carolina, whose demo I reviewed last year and found to be refreshingly good considering the general staleness of the whole melodeath idea. They were very listenable, didn’t forget the ‘death’ part (very important), and their demo stirred in me fandom.

Their new song, from their upcoming debut record ‘Damnation Doctrine’, is a rampaging exercise in guitar harmonies, blastbeats and galloping At the Gates worship. It’s raw, the vocals are brutal and the solo is killer. The melodies are strong, but there is still a lot of death metal in there. It’s more in the vein of The Haunted than anything that In Flames or Soilwork have done recently, which is always good. It’s whetting my appetite for the new record!
