Man, this has got to be one of my straight up, no bullshit, favourite four tracks of nasty, horrible death metal I’ve heard this year. Altar Blood are from North Carolina, US of A, and there is clearly something vile and putrid in the air around there. ‘Blasphemous Insemination’ is murky, thick with darkness and evil and rawer than a chainsaw massacre. The title track begins with two whole minutes of ominous spoken word before the fuzzy, buzzing riff appears, slicing through the haze. Vocals bring to mind early Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse, but the atmosphere is a lot more like Incantation’s early work. For a piece as raw and dense as this to keep the attention for its eight minute running time is remarkable. There is some excellent raw slams at the end, harking back to the days when it was about the heavy, not the SLAMZ BWOY!! Urgh. This is raw and primeval shit right here.

‘Defeated Nazarine’ is more of the same, a crawling, tortured beast of the dark. Altar Blood combine the raw heaviness of early NY death metal bands with the nasty, filthy atmospherics of black metal. If you told me I was listening to outtakes from Bleeding the Spawn era Suffocation, I’d believe you. ‘Christ Betrayed’ isn’t quite as murky, the production feels cleaner even if the music is still as vicious as ever. This is more overtly black metal, less guttural and dense and more razor sharp and icy.

Closing with the ominous and guttural ‘King of Whores’, ‘Blasphemous Insemination’ is one of the nastiest things I’ve heard in a while. Even though it was released last September, I’m plugging it as THE raw death metal demo of 2014, simply because I only found it this year. I can do that can’t I? Fuck it. Find it on their bandcamp.
