So 2014 begins a similar way to how 2013 ended for me; reviewing yet more brutal UK black metal. This time it is the new track from Scottish black metal band Spiritus who offer a sample track from their upcoming EP ‘Mens Intus Pavor’ (available on cassette through Fallen Through Ice Records).

‘Portraits of the Mind’ begins, unusually for this kind of raw black metal, with a spacey, effect laden intro, that builds into the inevitable explosion of harsh, raw as a chainsaw through frozen flesh, unholy black metal goodness. It’s a very raw track, enschewing a more traditional, early Darkthrone approach for something filthier and more primevil. It brings to mind Impaled Nazarene, if they were still raw and necro as fuck. It’s very good for what it is, a scathing cauldron of riffs and howling vocals. It definitely interests me in finding out how this grimy savagery plays out over a full release. Buy the fucking tape, and revel in something vicious and evil.
